PENDLETON - The InterMountain Education Service District announced Wednesday, Aug. 19, that Superintendent Mark S. Mulvihill will retire effective June 30, 2027. Mulvihill's career in education spans nearly four decades, with the bulk of that time dedicated to serving schools across Eastern Oregon.
Mulvihill has led the IMESD since 2015, overseeing programs that support special education, technology services, and professional development for teachers in the region. Before taking the top job, he served as the district's assistant superintendent for several years. His work in education began in the classroom, where he taught for more than a decade before moving into administrative roles.
The announcement gives the IMESD board ample time to conduct a thorough search for his replacement. Board members said they plan to involve staff, local school districts, and community members in the process over the next year and a half.
During his tenure, Mulvihill focused on expanding rural access to mental health resources for students and strengthening partnerships between small districts. He also guided the agency through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, helping schools adapt to remote learning and later navigate the return to in-person classes.
In a statement, Mulvihill said he is proud of the work done by the IMESD team and grateful for the trust placed in him by the communities he served. He added that he looks forward to spending more time with family after stepping down.
The board will begin accepting applications for the position in early 2026, with the goal of naming a new superintendent by the end of that year.
