Commencement Is the Proof: The Human Connections Behind WGU's Graduates

By Dr. Terrance Hopson and Malika Clinkscales

This month, graduates from across the Midwest will gather in Minneapolis to mark a milestone that took years of sacrifice and persistence. Each person walking across that stage carries a story that goes far beyond coursework and exams. Behind every diploma is a network of real people: mentors who answered late-night calls, family members who picked up extra chores, coworkers who covered shifts, and faculty who refused to let a student quit.

Western Governors University has always been known for its online model, but the graduation ceremony makes something clear. The model works because of human connection, not in spite of it. Students do not learn alone in a vacuum. They are supported by program mentors who check in weekly, by course instructors who offer targeted help, and by a community of peers who share advice in virtual study groups. That support system is the invisible engine behind every credential.

For many graduates, the journey involved balancing a full-time job, parenting, and unexpected life events. The flexibility of the university mattered, but so did the encouragement from people who believed in them when they doubted themselves. Commencement is the moment when those quiet acts of support become visible. It is a celebration not just of individual grit, but of the collective belief that made it possible.

As the caps go up in Minneapolis, the proof will be standing there in the crowd: parents wiping tears, spouses holding flowers, children cheering for a parent they watched study at the kitchen table. That is the real measure of success. WGU graduates do not earn degrees alone. They earn them together, and the ceremony honors every hand that helped along the way.
