The Connecticut State Department of Education has distributed 10.6 million dollars in competitive grants to 41 programs across the state, marking the second round of funding under a new initiative aimed at bolstering special education services. The grant program, established last year through Public Act 25-93, is designed to support school districts and nonprofit organizations that go beyond standard offerings to help students with disabilities.
This year's awards range from smaller community-based efforts to larger district-wide projects. The money will fund a variety of services, including expanded behavioral support, teacher training, assistive technology, and transition programs for students moving from high school to adult life. Officials say the goal is to encourage creative solutions that address gaps in the current system, particularly in areas where local resources are thin.
The selection process was competitive, with applicants required to show evidence of need and a clear plan for measuring student progress. The department did not release a full breakdown of every award, but highlighted several examples, including a program focused on early childhood intervention and another that partners with local businesses to create paid internships for students with autism. The funding is expected to be used over the next two years, with a final report due to the legislature. This follows a similar round last year that distributed 8.2 million dollars to 34 programs.
