Mark Harvey, a candidate for the Alameda County Board of Education, says he was suddenly locked out of all his Meta accounts just weeks before the June primary election. The suspension, which he received with no clear explanation, has left him unable to campaign effectively on social media.
Harvey lost access to his personal Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger accounts. He says Meta provided no specific reason for the ban and offered no straightforward way to appeal the decision. Without those platforms, he lost a direct line to thousands of potential voters.
"I feel silenced," Harvey said. "In a modern campaign, social media is how you reach people. To have that taken away with no warning and no recourse is devastating."
The timing of the suspension has raised questions. With the primary election approaching, Harvey was ramping up his outreach efforts. He believes the ban may have been triggered by a competitor or a disgruntled user reporting his content, but he has no way to confirm this.
Meta's automated moderation systems have faced criticism before for suspending accounts without human review. Harvey's case highlights the vulnerability of political candidates who rely on these platforms. Without a clear appeals process, a single automated flag can derail a campaign.
Harvey is now urging Meta to restore his accounts and provide transparency about the suspension. He says he will continue his campaign through other means, but the damage to his digital presence may already be done.
