U. of C. faculty and parents protest Lab School policy they say limits classroom discussion, inclusion

A group of parents and faculty members at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools is protesting a school policy they claim restricts classroom conversation and undermines efforts to build an inclusive environment. The policy, which administrators describe as "viewpoint-neutral," is meant to keep teachers from taking sides on controversial issues. But critics say it goes too far.

According to parents and teachers who spoke at a recent meeting, the rule limits what educators can say about current events, social justice topics, and even basic community values. One parent said the policy makes it hard for teachers to model how to be good citizens, because it discourages them from speaking up when a student says something harmful or exclusionary. Another faculty member argued that staying neutral on issues like racism or bullying is not really neutral at all, but instead protects the status quo.

Lab School administrators defend the policy, saying it aligns with the school's long-standing values of academic freedom and open inquiry. They argue that a viewpoint-neutral approach allows students to explore different perspectives without feeling pressured by a teacher's personal beliefs. The school's director said the goal is to create a space where all ideas can be debated respectfully, not to silence anyone.

The debate has become heated, with some parents threatening to pull their children from the school if the policy is not changed. Others worry that the controversy itself is harming the school community. The administration has not announced any plans to revise the policy, but has promised to continue listening to feedback.
