Tisha B'Av reminds us that rebuilding Israel begins with education

Tisha B'Av, the solemn day of mourning for the destruction of the First and Second Temples, carries a lesson that extends far beyond ancient stones and ashes. It is not merely a date for fasting and lamenting a lost past. The true call of the day is not to dwell on what was broken, but to understand how we can prevent the same fractures from forming again. The Talmud teaches that the Second Temple fell because of baseless hatred, a sin that no wall or army could defend against. If the physical structure was lost due to a failure of the heart and mind, then the rebuilding must begin with the same faculty.

This is where education steps into the center of the story. Not education as a simple transfer of facts or a path to a career, but education as the deliberate cultivation of character, empathy, and a shared sense of purpose. A nation that learns to see the divine image in every person, that teaches its children to argue for the sake of truth rather than victory, is building a foundation that no enemy can breach. The prophet Isaiah spoke of those who would be called "repairers of the breach." That title is not reserved for politicians or generals.
