In a 6-to-1 vote, the Summit School District Board of Education decided to close Breckenridge Elementary and consolidate with Upper Blue Elementary by the start of the 2027-2028 school year. Following around three hours of public comment and board discussion, the decision marks a major shift for the district's elementary school landscape.
Supporters of the move cited declining enrollment and rising operational costs as key drivers. The district has seen a steady drop in student numbers over the past decade, and officials argued that maintaining two under-enrolled schools was financially unsustainable. Consolidation, they said, would allow the district to redirect resources toward improving programs and facilities at a single, larger campus.
Opponents, however, expressed deep concern about the loss of a neighborhood school that has served the Breckenridge community for decades. Parents and staff argued that the closure would disrupt established routines, increase commute times for families, and potentially harm property values in the area. Some also questioned whether the timeline was too aggressive and whether the district had fully explored alternatives.
The lone dissenting board member voiced similar reservations, suggesting the decision was rushed and that more community input was needed before such a permanent step. Despite the opposition, the majority held firm, emphasizing that the move was necessary to ensure long-term financial health and educational quality for all students in the district.
Plans for the transition are expected to be developed over the coming months, with a focus on staffing, transportation, and facility upgrades at Upper Blue Elementary. The district has pledged to keep families informed throughout the process.
