Lindel Fields named Oklahoma Secretary of Education

Governor Kevin Stitt has named State Superintendent Lindel Fields to the additional post of Oklahoma Secretary of Education. Fields will keep his current job as head of the state's public schools while taking on the cabinet-level position. The move merges two of the most influential education roles in Oklahoma under one person.

Fields has served as State Superintendent since 2023, overseeing more than 500 school districts and roughly 700,000 students. In his new capacity, he will advise the governor on education policy, coordinate with other state agencies, and help shape the budget for schools and career tech programs. Stitt said the appointment reflects his trust in Fields to streamline decision-making and keep the state focused on student outcomes.

The dual role is not new in Oklahoma. Previous superintendents have held the secretary title during times when the governor wanted tighter alignment between the executive branch and the education department. But some lawmakers and education advocates have raised questions about whether one person can fairly balance the independence of the superintendent's office with the governor's policy agenda.

Fields said he plans to prioritize teacher recruitment, early literacy, and expanding career pathways for high schoolers. He also noted that he will work closely with the legislature on funding formulas and school safety measures. His first major task will be presenting the education portion of the governor's proposed budget in early February.

The appointment does not require Senate confirmation, so Fields will begin his expanded duties immediately. He will continue to be elected by voters in his current role, with the next statewide election for superintendent set for 2026.
