The National Education Association donated roughly $933,000 last month to the Protect AR Rights ballot committee, according to a filing submitted Monday to the Arkansas Ethics Commission. The committee is pushing a proposed constitutional amendment that would expand direct democracy in the state.
The contribution marks one of the largest single donations to the campaign so far. The money will likely be used for signature gathering, advertising, and legal work as the committee works to qualify the measure for the next statewide election. Supporters argue the amendment would give voters more control over state laws by making it easier to place citizen initiatives on the ballot and by limiting the legislature's ability to overturn approved measures.
Opponents have raised concerns about the influence of out-of-state money in Arkansas politics, noting that the NEA is based in Washington, D.C. They also argue the amendment could lead to frequent and costly election cycles. The Protect AR Rights committee has not yet commented on the donation beyond the required disclosure.
The filing deadline came as both sides ramp up their efforts ahead of the signature submission deadline. The amendment has become a flashpoint in the ongoing debate over ballot access and legislative power in the state.
