A bipartisan vote in the U.S. Senate has escalated the fight over a controversial Department of Education proposal to shift significant special education duties to outside contractors. The move, which has drawn sharp criticism from disability advocates, teachers unions, and now lawmakers from both parties, appears to be losing ground as opposition grows.

The plan, first floated earlier this year, would offload key functions such as individualized education program oversight, dispute resolution, and parent training to private entities. Supporters argue it would reduce federal bureaucracy and give states more flexibility. Meanwhile, parent groups have organized letter-writing campaigns and local forums to keep pressure on the administration.

The Department of Education has not yet responded to the Senate vote, but officials have previously said the plan is still in early stages and that public input would be considered. For now, the future of the proposal remains uncertain, but the bipartisan pushback makes any quick implementation unlikely.
