Hundreds of young protesters gathered in New Delhi on Wednesday, marking the first major demonstration by a new generation of activists who call themselves the "Cockroach movement." The group, largely composed of Gen Z students and recent graduates, is demanding the resignation of India's education minister over alleged failures in the public school system.
The protest began at Jantar Mantar, a historic site often used for demonstrations, before marching toward the Ministry of Education. Participants carried signs reading "I am a cockroach" and "We will not be crushed," a reference to the movement's name. The term, organizers say, symbolizes resilience and the refusal to be silenced despite being treated as pests by the political establishment.
"We are the cockroaches of this system," said 21-year-old university student and protest leader Ananya Sharma. "They try to step on us, but we keep coming back. We are not going away until our demands are met."
The movement first gained traction on social media platforms like Instagram and Telegram, where videos of students criticizing the government's handling of textbook revisions and exam reforms went viral. The group's core demand is the removal of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, whom they accuse of pushing a narrow, nationalist agenda in school curricula and failing to address teacher shortages.
Police maintained a heavy presence but made no arrests. The protest remained peaceful, though some scuffles broke out when officers attempted to block the march route. By evening, the crowd had dispersed, but organizers vowed to return every week until their demands are addressed.
Political analysts note that while the Cockroach movement is still small, its use of digital organizing and confrontational language mirrors similar youth-led protests in other countries. Whether it can sustain momentum in a country with a history of student activism remains to be seen.
