A new round of $5,000 scholarships has been awarded to students aiming for careers tied to the work of Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories. The awards, announced on May 25, 2026, target undergraduates and graduate students focused on science, technology, engineering, and math fields that support national security and advanced research.
Recipients were selected based on academic achievement, leadership potential, and a clear commitment to laboratory-related work. The scholarship program, funded through a partnership with local educational foundations, aims to build a pipeline of talent for the two major New Mexico facilities. Officials noted that many past winners have gone on to internships or full-time positions at the labs.
One winner, a mechanical engineering student from the University of New Mexico, plans to research materials for high-energy physics experiments. Another, studying computer science at New Mexico State, hopes to develop cybersecurity tools for critical infrastructure. The scholarships cover tuition and fees for the upcoming academic year.
Applications for the next cycle are expected to open in early 2027, with preference given to students from underrepresented backgrounds in STEM. The labs employ thousands of scientists and engineers, and these awards help ensure a steady supply of skilled graduates ready to tackle complex challenges.
