Arkansas wins federal waiver on education rules

Arkansas has secured a federal waiver that will allow the state to consolidate its education funding plans into a single document, rather than submitting multiple separate applications for different federal programs. The U.S. Department of Education approved the waiver, which is part of a broader push to reduce bureaucratic red tape for states.

Under the previous system, Arkansas had to file separate plans for programs like Title I, which supports low-income students, and other federal grants. The new approach lets state education officials design one unified strategy for how they will spend federal dollars. Supporters say this will streamline administration, cut down on paperwork, and give local school districts more flexibility to address their specific needs.

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders praised the move, calling it a win for efficiency and local control. She argued that the old process forced schools to jump through hoops instead of focusing on student outcomes. Critics, however, have raised concerns that a single plan could reduce federal oversight and accountability for how money is spent.

The waiver is effective immediately and will apply to the current school year. Arkansas is one of a handful of states to receive such permission, and education officials hope the change will lead to better coordination between state and local programs. The state will still have to report on how the funds are used and show progress on student achievement goals.
