The American Dental Education Association has stepped up its lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill, focusing on how federal higher education policy affects dental schools and their students. With student debt levels continuing to climb, the association is pressing lawmakers to reconsider several aspects of the current loan system and funding formulas.

At the center of the discussion is the rising cost of dental education. The average dental school graduate now carries well over $300,000 in student loan debt, a figure that has grown faster than inflation for more than a decade. ADEA argues that without targeted changes, this financial burden will push talented students away from the profession, especially those from lower-income backgrounds. The group is asking Congress to expand eligibility for income-driven repayment plans and to increase funding for loan forgiveness programs that serve dentists working in underserved areas.

Another key issue is the federal matching formula for dental school construction and technology upgrades. Many schools rely on grants from the Health Resources and Services Administration to modernize clinics and simulation labs. ADEA wants to see the authorization levels raised, arguing that outdated facilities limit the number of patients schools can treat and reduce the quality of clinical training.

The association is also watching the upcoming reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. It has submitted formal recommendations to both the House and Senate education committees, calling for simpler paperwork for federal aid applications and better interest rate caps on graduate PLUS loans. ADEA leaders say they are encouraged by early bipartisan interest in addressing workforce shortages, but they warn that any final bill must include specific provisions for dental education rather than lumping it in with all health professions.

For now, the association is focusing its energy on building coalitions with other health education groups and meeting with key committee staff. The goal is to ensure that dental students are not left behind as broader higher education reform moves forward.
