The City of Evanston is bringing back its free summer cycling education series for a second year, starting June 28. The program, run in partnership with the Evanston Public Library and the Recyclery, aims to teach residents of all ages how to ride safely and confidently.
The series includes beginner classes for adults who never learned to ride, as well as sessions on bike maintenance and urban street skills. Organizers say the goal is to make cycling more accessible and to encourage people to use bikes for everyday trips instead of cars. All equipment is provided, and participants do not need to bring their own bicycles.
Classes will be held at various locations around the city, including library branches and park spaces. The schedule runs through August, with most sessions lasting about two hours. Registration is required because space is limited, but there is no cost to attend.
Last year's program drew over 200 participants, according to city officials. The Recyclery, a local nonprofit that promotes bicycle repair and reuse, will help lead the hands-on maintenance workshops. The Evanston Public Library is hosting several of the classroom-style sessions focused on road safety and local bike routes.
The series is part of a broader push by the city to promote sustainable transportation. Evanston has been adding bike lanes and improving pedestrian infrastructure in recent years. Organizers hope the free classes will help more people feel comfortable riding, whether for recreation or commuting.
