California education leaders react to Gov. Newsom’s revised budget

Education leaders across California offered mixed reactions to Governor Gavin Newsom's updated state budget proposal, praising additional funding for special education while pressing for more support for English learners and affordable childcare programs.

The revised budget, released this week, includes a modest increase for special education services, a move that drew immediate approval from school district officials and advocacy groups. Many had warned that previous funding levels were insufficient to meet the needs of students with disabilities, especially as districts continue to recover from pandemic-related learning disruptions.

However, the applause was tempered by concerns over what was left out. Several education leaders noted that the budget did not go far enough to address the needs of English learners, who make up a significant portion of California's student population. They argued that targeted funding for language acquisition programs and additional classroom resources remains critical.

Childcare and early education advocates also expressed disappointment. While the governor's plan maintains some existing subsidies, they said it falls short of expanding access to affordable childcare for low-income families. With rising costs and limited availability, many parents are struggling to find care, which in turn affects workforce participation and family stability.

School superintendents and board members emphasized that the budget is a starting point, not a final agreement. They plan to continue lobbying state lawmakers for adjustments before the June deadline. The conversation now shifts to the legislature, where debates over funding priorities are expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
