AAPS Board of Education tours new Mitchell Elementary construction

Members of the Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education, along with district leaders and Mitchell Elementary Principal Samantha Cucu, toured the new school building last week. The construction, design, architecture, and engineering teams led the walkthrough, pointing out key features of the 92,139-square-foot facility.

The new Mitchell Elementary is designed to support modern learning needs. The building includes flexible classroom spaces, a large media center, and dedicated areas for art and music instruction. Natural light fills the hallways and common areas, with large windows placed throughout the structure. The design also emphasizes safety, with a secure main entrance and controlled access points.

Principal Cucu said the new space will give students and teachers room to grow. The school replaces an older building that had served the community for decades. District officials noted that the project is part of a broader bond program aimed at upgrading aging schools across the district.

Construction crews are finishing interior work and landscaping. The school is expected to open for students at the start of the next academic year.
