The window is closing for Texas families seeking to secure an Education Freedom Account for the upcoming school year. The program, which provides state funds for private school tuition and other educational expenses, has seen overwhelming demand, with over 257,000 student applications submitted statewide.
The Houston metropolitan area has emerged as one of the leading regions for applicant interest. However, with only an estimated 100,000 seats funded by the program's initial $1 billion allocation, many applicants may be placed on a waitlist.
Awards will be distributed based on a state-mandated priority system. The first tier is reserved for students who are currently enrolled in public school and meet specific criteria, such as having a disability, being in the foster care system, or experiencing bullying. Subsequent tiers will then be considered based on family income levels.
State officials urge interested families to ensure their applications are completed and submitted before the fast-approaching deadline. The program represents a significant shift in Texas education policy, offering new choices for families while navigating substantial initial demand that far exceeds available resources for this inaugural year.
