Retired Broward special education teacher killed in Fort Lauderdale hit-and-run

A Fort Lauderdale woman who dedicated her life to helping others was killed in a hit-and-run crash over the weekend, leaving family and friends in mourning. The victim, a retired special education teacher from Broward County, is being remembered for her enormous heart and unwavering generosity.

Police say the incident occurred late Saturday evening when the woman was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Northeast 15th Avenue. The driver fled the scene, and authorities are still searching for the suspect. The victim's identity has not been officially released, but loved ones have identified her as a longtime educator who spent decades working with students with special needs.

Colleagues and former students described her as a patient, kind, and selfless woman who went above and beyond for her classroom. She often bought supplies out of her own pocket and stayed late to help struggling children. After retiring, she remained active in the community, volunteering at local schools and charities.

A close friend told reporters that the teacher was simply walking home from a nearby store when the crash happened. The friend said she was the type of person who would give you the shirt off her back and never ask for anything in return.

Fort Lauderdale police are asking anyone with information about the hit-and-run to come forward. The investigation remains ongoing. A memorial is being planned by former students and fellow teachers who want to honor her legacy of compassion and service.
