May 24, 2024, is a date that will forever resonate with me. Prior to last year, my understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities was limited. While I was aware of disability as a concept, it seemed far removed from my daily experiences. This perception shifted dramatically when I received my diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes.
In an instant, I was thrust into a world where I had to navigate the complexities of living with a disability. This personal journey opened my eyes to the systemic inequities that many face in educational settings. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has been a cornerstone in advocating for the rights of students with disabilities for the past 50 years. However, the struggle is far from over.
As I learned more, it became clear that the fight for equitable access to education is ongoing. It is essential to recognize that the rights granted under IDEA are not merely legal provisions but fundamental human rights that must be upheld and protected. The journey toward full inclusion and understanding in education highlights the need for continued advocacy and awareness.
