The Penn State College of Education marked a significant milestone this week as Amanda Peterson became the first graduate of the World Campus Doctor of Education (D.Ed.) program. Peterson completed her entire doctoral degree through the online platform, a path that required rigorous coursework and a dissertation conducted remotely.
The D.Ed. program, designed for working professionals in education leadership, launched with the goal of providing a flexible yet demanding alternative to traditional on-campus study. Peterson's achievement demonstrates that a terminal degree can be earned without relocating or pausing a career. Her research focused on improving instructional strategies for adult learners in community college settings.
Faculty members praised Peterson's discipline and the quality of her work, noting that the online format did not compromise academic standards. The program requires students to complete a capstone project that addresses real-world problems in education, and Peterson's study was selected for presentation at a national conference.
University officials expect the D.Ed. cohort to grow as more educators seek advanced credentials that fit their schedules. Peterson, who works as a curriculum coordinator in a mid-Atlantic school district, said the experience was challenging but rewarding. She plans to apply her research to develop better training programs for teachers. The program currently enrolls students from 15 states.
