One word came up often as Annette Camlin described her family’s decadelong experience with Lawrence Public Schools’ special education services: trauma. Camlin was one of several parents who joined former teachers to voice crucial concerns about the district’s special education (SPED) services.
During a recent meeting, parents expressed their frustrations over the lack of adequate support and resources for their children. Many shared personal stories of feeling unheard and marginalized within the system, highlighting a pattern of neglect that has persisted for years.
The parents emphasized that the emotional and psychological toll on their children has been significant, affecting not only their educational experiences but also their overall well-being. Advocates are calling for immediate reforms to ensure that the needs of students with disabilities are met with the urgency and care they deserve.
As the community rallies together, there is hope for change and a commitment to creating a more supportive environment for all students in the district.
