Need for early, institution-wide AI literacy education highlighted in study

A new study published in Research & Practice in Assessment calls for universities to implement early, institution-wide artificial intelligence literacy programs for students and faculty. The research, conducted by Jaime Miller, Stuart Miller, and Rachel Whitman in collaboration with colleagues from James Madison University and the Office of the Provost, argues that AI literacy should not be treated as an optional or specialized skill.

The authors surveyed current approaches to AI education and found that most institutions offer only fragmented training, often limited to specific departments or elective courses. This leaves many students and instructors unprepared for the rapid integration of AI tools into academic and professional settings. The study emphasizes that AI literacy must go beyond basic technical proficiency. It should include understanding ethical implications, data privacy concerns, and the ability to critically evaluate AI-generated content.

The researchers recommend that universities embed AI literacy into core curricula from the first year of study. They also suggest mandatory professional development for faculty to ensure consistent teaching across disciplines. Without such systemic changes, the study warns, institutions risk widening the digital divide and leaving graduates underprepared for a workforce increasingly shaped by AI. The findings underscore a growing urgency for higher education to adapt its foundational practices.
