Texas education officials announced that over 53,000 additional student applicants have been awarded funds through the Texas Education Freedoms Account program for the upcoming school year. These students represent the second tier of applicants who applied for the state's school choice initiative.
The Texas Education Agency confirmed the new awards, which bring the total number of students receiving education savings accounts to a significantly higher figure. The program, known as TEFA, provides taxpayer-funded accounts that families can use for private school tuition, tutoring, textbooks, and other educational expenses.
This second round of funding targets students who applied during the initial window but were placed on a waiting list due to high demand. Lawmakers allocated billions of dollars for the program, which aims to give parents more control over their children's education. Supporters argue it promotes competition and improves academic outcomes. Critics, however, raise concerns about diverting public funds away from traditional public schools and the lack of accountability for private institutions.
Eligible families will receive notification about their award status and instructions on how to access the funds. The program continues to draw strong interest across the state, with thousands more applications expected in future enrollment periods.
