The Humboldt County Office of Education celebrated five local educators on Wednesday during its annual Excellence in Teaching Awards ceremony. The event, held at the Eureka conference center, drew a crowd of colleagues, administrators, and family members to honor the teachers for their dedication and impact in the classroom.
This year's recipients were selected from a pool of nominees across the county's school districts. Each teacher was recognized for innovative lesson plans, strong student engagement, and contributions to their school communities. The honorees included a kindergarten teacher known for integrating outdoor learning, a high school science teacher who launched a student-led environmental project, and a special education instructor praised for creating inclusive classroom environments.
Superintendent Michael Davies spoke at the ceremony, noting that the awards highlight the essential role teachers play in shaping young lives. "These five individuals represent the best of what Humboldt County education has to offer," Davies said. "Their passion and creativity inspire not only their students but also their peers."
Each award recipient received a commemorative plaque and a small grant to support classroom resources. The ceremony also featured performances by a local student choir and remarks from former award winners. The Excellence in Teaching Awards have been a tradition in Humboldt County for over two decades, aiming to boost morale and recognize the often unseen work of educators.
