Early childhood education advocates in Massachusetts are raising alarms over a state Senate spending bill that eliminates funding for two key programs and slashes agency operational budgets. Officials warn that the proposed cuts could disrupt services for thousands of young children and families across the commonwealth.
The Senate's budget plan, which passed last week, removes all funding for a home-visiting initiative that supports new parents and a preschool expansion grant program aimed at low-income communities. the bill reduces administrative funding for the state's Department of Early Education and Care by nearly 15 percent. Advocates argue that these reductions would force program closures, increase waitlists for childcare subsidies, and undermine years of progress in expanding access to early learning.
"These programs are lifelines for working families," said one early education official who spoke on condition of anonymity. "Without them, parents may have to leave jobs or struggle to find affordable care."
Supporters of the cuts, however, point to tight state revenues and the need to prioritize other areas like housing and transportation. Senate leaders have noted that the budget still allocates significant funding to K-12 schools and higher education.
Early education groups are now lobbying the House and governor to restore the funding in final negotiations. They argue that investing in early childhood yields long-term economic benefits, including higher graduation rates and reduced need for special education services. The final budget is due by July 1.
