Clara the whale provides kids marine biology education opportunity in Oshkosh

A giant, inflatable whale named Clara made a splash in Oshkosh this week, giving local children a hands-on lesson in marine biology without leaving the state. The life-sized replica, which stretches nearly the length of a school bus, was set up at a community park as part of a summer education program. Kids crawled through the whale's mouth and explored its internal organs, including a model heart and ribcage, all while learning about ocean ecosystems.

The program aimed to spark curiosity about sea life among children who rarely get to visit an ocean. Volunteers guided groups through the inflatable structure, pointing out how baleen plates work or where a whale's lungs sit. For many kids, it was the first time they saw just how massive a real blue whale can be. Organizers said the hands-on approach helps facts stick better than a textbook.

Parents watched from the sidelines as their children laughed and asked questions about what whales eat and how they sleep. One volunteer noted that the event also touched on conservation, explaining how pollution affects marine animals.
