AI to Support Neurodivergent Learners in Vocational Education and Training

A new report highlights the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced technologies in creating more supportive and effective vocational education for neurodivergent learners. The focus is on aiding students with conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia throughout their training, apprenticeships, and transition into the workforce.

The findings, drawn from extensive stakeholder consultations, suggest these technologies can make Vocational Education and Training (VET) significantly more adaptive and accessible. For example, Extended Reality (XR) offers immersive, practice-oriented learning environments that can be tailored to individual needs. Meanwhile, common accessibility tools like speech-to-text software have seen dramatic improvements in accuracy, thanks to advancements in AI and cloud computing.

However, the integration of these powerful tools is not without its challenges. The report cautions about risks concerning data privacy, algorithmic bias, impacts on socio-emotional well-being, and the broader development of foundational skills. These concerns extend to the wider student population but require particular attention in supportive contexts.

To harness the benefits while mitigating risks, the report outlines key policy guidelines. It emphasizes the crucial role of governments in upskilling VET instructors, strengthening the assistive technology landscape, and providing clear guidance to learners, institutions, and employers on navigating this new technological frontier. The goal is to ensure that innovation leads to genuine inclusion and success for all learners.
